Free and Almost-Free Chongqing: Walks, Viewpoints and the Vertical City

Most of what makes Chongqing look impossible costs nothing to stand in front of. The Liziba monorail through the apartment block, the Kuixinglou doorway that turns out to be the 22nd floor, Hongyadong and the Qiansimen Bridge viewpoint, and Chaotianmen where the two rivers meet are all free and open around the clock. Two things on this list are not quite free: Nanshan One Tree costs CNY 28, and the Shancheng Third Lane walkway is free but only pleasant if you start at the Consular Lane end and walk down. The honest way to plan this list is as a single loop on foot, because what you are paying for, if anything, is a bus or metro fare between them.

How I picked these

These options come from the Chongqing catalogue and supplied research. The selection answers: How much of Chongqing's famous vertical city can you see without paying for a ticket? Records are filtered before text is written, ranked by documented evidence and language access, then limited to 8 options. Research notes are not proof of a personal visit.

No personal visits are claimed. Classification as an indoor or cultural activity is an editorial mapping, separate from verification of price, language or availability.

Before you choose: Read the Ctrip sight page: CNY 28 adult and CNY 14 concession, 09:00-22:30 with last entry at 22:30, and CNY 38 for the 9D dome cinema and CNY 399 for the drone package. A second Ctrip listing gives 09:00-23:00, also with last entry 22:30, so the 22:30 cut-off is the figure used.

The two rivers meeting at Chaotianmen with the Chongqing skyline behind

Chaotianmen Square and the Two-Rivers Confluence

Before you choose: Chaotianmen Square is free and open around the clock, which Ctrip's attraction page, Tongcheng and traveller guides all agree on, and no booking is needed. It sits at the tip of the Yuzhong peninsula where the green Jialing and the silt-heavy Yangtze meet, with Raffles City directly behind it, and one to two hours is a realistic stop. The best window is roughly 16:30-21:00, when the two-tone confluence reads clearly and the riverfront lighting comes on about 19:30. Metro Line 1 to Chaotianmen exit 4, or about ten minutes on foot from Xiaoshizi. Two things are worth telling readers: the square faces the back of Raffles City, so anyone who wants the full frontal skyline should cross to the Danzishi riverbank or Nanbin Road instead, and the drone light shows over the two rivers are usually staged on Saturdays around 20:30, when the square gets very crowded. It is also the departure point for the two-rivers night cruises, which are a separate record.

A cliffside walkway above the old lanes of the Shancheng trail in Chongqing

Mountain City Cliffside Trail (Shancheng Third Lane)

Cliffside walkway along the old mountain-city trail, part boardwalk and part lane, with tea stops along the way.

Before you choose: Shancheng Xiang, also called the Third Mountain City Walkway, is the busiest of Chongqing's 17 built cliffside walkways and is free with no booking. Sources agree on roughly 1.7 km end to end and 1.5-3 hours with stops. The lanes are open around the clock while the cafes, teahouses and craft shops keep roughly 10:00-22:00, and the lanterns come on about 19:30. The one thing worth telling readers is the direction: start at the Consular Lane (Lingshi Xiang) entrance near Qixinggang metro exit 1 on Lines 1 and 10 and walk downhill, because starting from Zhongxing Road means climbing the whole way. Free stops along the route are the Ren'ai Hall ruins and wilderness garden, the cantilevered plank walkway about 70 m above the river, and the Houshe mansion; the Shancheng Shiguang library charges CNY 5 for its reading room and tea is optional. Budget is recorded as 0 to 30 to cover a tea or a snack, not an entry fee.

The Testbed 2 creative park and the view over Chongqing from Eling Ridge

Testbed 2 and the Eling Ridge Viewpoint

Testbed 2, a printing works turned creative park on the Eling ridge, with rooftop terraces over the Yangtze, joined by a short walk to Eling Park and its Kansheng tower.

Best for
Travellers who want a rooftop view, a coffee and a walk through an old residential ridge in one go.

Before you choose: Testbed 2, the Erchang creative park at 1 Eling Zheng Street in Yuzhong, is free to enter; Chongqing's local information site states 9:00-22:00 and two to three hours as a realistic visit, while Ctrip lists it as open all day, so the opening hours are given with that disagreement noted. The site was the Central Bank's banknote printing works and later Printing Factory No 2, and the rooftop used in the film I Belonged to You is the reason most visitors come; the local guide is explicit that the rooftop view costs nothing unless you pay for something else there, and that a few small exhibitions charge separately. Getting there is the practical catch: metro Line 1 to Eling, or the Testbed 2 shuttle bus, and the local guide advises against walking up the three-tier road from Liziba even though it looks close on a map. Budget is recorded as free, with a note that individual exhibitions may charge.

The Kuixinglou building where a ground-level doorway opens onto the 22nd floor

Kuixinglou Building Ground-to-22nd-Floor Illusion

Kuixinglou, the building where you can walk in at street level on one side and step out onto what looks like the 22nd floor on the other.

Best for
Travellers collecting the places where the city's vertical geography becomes a joke you can stand inside.
Price per person
RMB 0 (source checked)
Activity time
20–40 min (check selected option)

high (no interpretation on site at all)

Before you choose: Kuixinglou is listed by Ctrip with a from-price of zero and by Qunar's city-walk itinerary as free and open all day, so it is treated as a free stop rather than a ticketed attraction. It sits at 17 Datang Square, Linjiangmen, Yuzhong district, and the point of the visit is the vertical trick Chongqing is known for: the footbridge you step onto reads as ground level but is roughly the 22nd floor of the block below, which is the same illusion the Liziba monorail is famous for. It is a short stop, not a half-day, hence the 20-40 minute window. Being a working residential tower and a public walkway, there is no booking and no ticket, and it is worth reminding readers to keep noise down. English support is not applicable and left unconfirmed.
