Taitung to Hualien, A 5-Day Taiwan East Coast Itinerary

Taiwan is a land of breathtaking natural landscapes and unique cultural experiences. As a proud local, whenever friends visit, I always make it a point to recommend Taiwan’s East Coast—particularly Hualien and Taitung. These two regions are known for their stunning natural beauty and vibrant indigenous culture, offering a stark contrast to the bustling cityscapes of Taiwan’s west coast. The East Coast remains a sanctuary of untouched nature, dramatic coastlines, and tranquil vibes—a favorite destination among both locals and travelers.

Hualien is a city that sits beautifully between the Pacific Ocean and Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range. Its stunning landscapes are like works of art crafted by nature itself. Imagine standing on cliffs overlooking crystal-clear waters, feeling the salty breeze of the ocean—it’s an invigorating experience for the soul.

One must-visit spot in Hualien is Taroko National Park, famous for its dramatic gorges, marble cliffs, and lush green valleys. Once walking through the park feels like stepping into another world, with its breathtaking trails, waterfalls, and suspension bridges.

Further south lies Taitung, a true hidden gem. With its endless coastline and clear blue waters, Taitung is a haven for beach lovers and surfers alike. Its mountain ranges provide perfect opportunities for hiking and exploring unspoiled nature.

Taitung’s slower pace and laid-back vibe make it an ideal place to unwind. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely walk along its scenic beaches or exploring its indigenous heritage, you’ll find Taitung to be a slice of paradise.

• Southbound: Start in Hualien and continue south to Taitung.
• Northbound: Begin in Taitung and head up to Hualien.

Most international visitors arrive in Taipei, so it’s common to travel from Taipei to the East Coast.

• Southbound Route: Ideal if you have over a week and plan to continue south to Kenting or Kaohsiung.
• Northbound Route: Perfect for a 5–7 day itinerary if you’re returning to Taipei.

Train: Taiwan’s train system is efficient and scenic. The Tze-Chiang Ltd. Express is the fastest option and highly recommended.

• Check train schedules and fares (senior citizens aged 65+ get 50% off).
• Don’t miss the famous railway lunchbox—the pork chop bento is a must-try!

• Road Trip: Renting a car or scooter is a great way to experience the East Coast’s rugged beauty. However, the mountain roads can be challenging, so drive carefully.

Arrive at Taitung Station, and there are a few small shops near the station, also motorcycle rentals available. Then we checked into the luxurious Sheraton Taitung Hotel.

After check-in, explore local delicacies nearby:

End the day by strolling through the Taitung Railway Art Village, a vibrant cultural space full of art exhibitions and live music, before heading back to the hotel for a relaxing hot spring soak.

Water Running Upward: Experience the mind-bending optical illusion where water appears to flow upward.

Sanxiantai and Sanxiantai Arch bridge: A famous landmark in Taitung County, renowned for its stunning coastline and rock formations. The rocks here have been sculpted by ocean waves, creating various unique shapes. The arch bridge connecting Sanxiantai is a path built along the shoreline, where visitors can stroll, enjoy the picturesque views of the sea and sky, and feel the gentle sea breeze.

Wrap up the day with a soak in the hotel’s hot spring and a late-night snack of braised snacks.

Rent a Gogoro scooter and cruise around the city at your own pace and then visit:

Taitung Forest Park: A peaceful retreat with lush greenery, serene lakes, and the mysterious “Black Forest.”

Mr. Brown Avenue: A cycling path surrounded by rice paddies, famous for its picturesque views and the iconic “Takeshi Kaneshiro Tree.”

After enjoying a fantastic buffet breakfast at the Sheraton, we headed to Taitung Train Station to catch the noon train to Hualien

While waiting at the station, I collected several train tickets from Taiwan, which are quite meaningful as souvenirs! Taiwan has many place names that carry auspicious meanings, making them special gifts filled with blessings.

It took a 2.5-hour train ride to Hualien. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the staff from our accommodation, a industrial-chic design B&B called “Sleeping Inn” which is conveniently located by the river, close to the night market and city center.

The breakfast is absolutely delicious and beautifully presented! Also, there’s even a massage chair on the second floor!

We first set out to grab lunch, but to our surprise, many restaurants in Hualien were closed in the afternoon. Our only option was McDonald’s.

After resting at the hotel for a bit, we headed out to the largest tourist night market in Hualien—Dongdamen Night Market. There were so many tasty options to explore, sampling local specialties like toast and fried sweet potato balls!

Qixingtan Scenic Area: A tranquil pebble beach offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and perfect spots for sunrise photography.

Taroko National Park: Hike through must-see spots like Yangzhikou Trail, tunnel of nine turns, and Shakadang Trail.

Qingshui Cliffs: One of Taiwan’s most dramatic coastal landscapes, where sheer cliffs meet the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean.

End your journey by catching a train back to Taipei the next morning.

*If you’re a solo backpacker, you can take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle’s Route 310 to the Taroko Visitor Center. For attractions outside of Taroko, you can either call a taxi or rent a car. However, the overall eastern coast is much more suitable for a road trip!
